A peaceful evening swim on Thursday at Fresh Creek, Andros, turned into a harrowing ordeal for a 22-year-old Australian woman. Around 5:30 p.m., the woman was attacked by a shark while wading in waist-deep water with family members. The shocking incident has left the local community and visitors on edge. The woman suffered serious injuries to her right arm, prompting immediate action from quick-thinking relatives and bystanders who assisted her out of the water and rushed her to a local clinic. Due to the severity of her injuries, the victim was airlifted to New Providence for advanced surgical care. The woman’s current condition has not been publicly updated beyond the initial reports of serious injury. Authorities in Andros have since launched an investigation into the species of shark involved and the specific circumstances of the encounter. Despite the rarity of shark attacks in the Bahamas, officials are reminding swimmers to stay vigilant. Safety recommendations include avoiding swimming at dusk or dawn, when sharks are most active, staying in groups, and removing shiny jewelry which can mimic the sheen of fish scales. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
