Argentina faces wild boar crisis: 3-5 million animals threaten biodiversity

Argentina is grappling with a growing environmental crisis: a wild boar population estimated between three and five million. Víctor Fratto, an environmental management graduate and specialist in wildlife and biodiversity, sounded the alarm in an interview, stating that the invasive species is causing severe damage to native ecosystems.

Fratto explained that the wild boar, which is not native to Argentina, has proliferated due to lack of natural predators and favorable conditions. ‘There are between three and five million wild boars in the country, and they are devastating our biodiversity,’ he said. The animals destroy crops, displace native fauna, and can transmit diseases.

According to the specialist, the only effective measure to control the population is hunting. ‘There is no other choice but to control the wild boar; our obligation is to protect biodiversity,’ Fratto asserted. He called for coordinated efforts between authorities, landowners, and hunters to manage the overpopulation.

The issue has implications beyond ecology, affecting agricultural production and rural communities. The government faces pressure to implement management strategies as the problem escalates.
