In a recent development, the Court of Appeal has overturned the 2022 ruling and death sentence of Kendell Gomez, a man from St Joseph, regarding the 2006 murder of chartered accountant Paul Roopsingh. The court has now ordered a retrial, nearly 19 years after the initial incident. Gomez, who has already served almost 19 years in prison, was represented by Senior Counsel Hasine Shaikh and attorney Shaun Morris. Representing the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) was Attorney Wayne Rajbansie. The appeal hearing took place at the Hall of Justice in Port of Spain, presided over by Justices Gillian Lucky, Carla Brown-Antoine, and Eleanor Donaldson-Honeywell.
