The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) has officially announced that Nomination Day for the upcoming general elections will be held on April 13. This critical milestone allows aspiring candidates to formally submit their nomination papers, thereby confirming their intent to run for election. The commission has established 17 locations across the country where candidates can register their nominations between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
Candidates must meet stringent eligibility requirements as set by ABEC. To be eligible for nomination, candidates must be at least 21 years of age and citizens of Antigua and Barbuda. They are also required to have resided in the country for a minimum of one year preceding the elections. Completing and submitting the nomination paper, which includes the candidate’s full name, residence, and detailed description, is a mandatory part of the process.
ABEC’s Public Relations Officer, Alisa Greaham, underscored the importance of meeting all specified criteria and deadlines to ensure a smooth nomination process. “Candidates must demonstrate a good command of the English language and will need the support of nominators to validate their candidacy,” Greaham outlined.
Nomination Day is a pivotal event that sets the stage for the electoral campaign, which has already seen significant political activity as parties prepare for the general elections scheduled for April 30. The major political parties in Antigua and Barbuda have been ramping up their campaign efforts, with both the Antigua Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) and the United Progressive Party (UPP) engaging the electorate and presenting their platforms.
This Nomination Day serves as an opportunity for political movements and independent candidates to officially enter the race, solidifying their participation in the democratic process. As the country inches closer to the election date, this step ensures that all contenders are prepared to present their vision and leadership plans to the voters of Antigua and Barbuda.
