**ANC Leader Calls for Opposition Unity After CPP Collapse**

*Paynesville, Liberia – 7 September 2026* – Alexander B. Cummings, the political leader of the Alternative National Congress (ANC), said on Sunday that the collapse of the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) should not prevent Liberia’s opposition parties from working together again. His remarks followed former President George Manneh Weah’s weekend round‑table at his Jamaica Resort office in Paynesville, where opposition leaders convened to discuss a potential common platform ahead of the 2029 elections.

Cummings, who served as the CPP’s standard bearer when the alliance disintegrated, urged the opposition to learn from past mistakes. “The mistakes of the CPP should not stop us from working together,” he told reporters. “We need to be smarter and wiser about how we do it, but we must work together as a country, as a people.”

The CPP, which was certified by the National Elections Commission in 2020, originally comprised the ANC, the Unity Party, the Liberty Party and the All Liberian Party. The alliance fractured over leadership disputes and disagreements over its framework document. The All Liberian Party withdrew in December 2021, the Unity Party followed in February 2022, and the Liberty Party split into rival factions before the 2023 election. The CPP was formally dissolved in 2024.

In the 2023 presidential election, Cummings ran as the CPP candidate with Charlyne Brumskine as his running mate. He finished fifth in the first round, receiving 29,613 votes (1.61 % of valid votes). The CPP endorsed Weah for the runoff, but Joseph Nyuma Boakai defeated Weah in November. Cummings said he did not personally join the CPP’s endorsement of Weah.

During the interview, Cummings called for a shift away from a “habit of tearing rivals down.” “We should be working together to lift up the country and wish each other well,” he said. He added that the opposition should hold the government accountable while also offering constructive alternatives. “We should not just criticize; we should also offer solutions,” he said.

When asked whether he would accept a vice‑presidential slot on another ticket in 2029, Cummings declined to rule out the possibility. “This is about Liberia, not about me,” he said, encouraging journalists to pose the same question to other political leaders.

Cummings did not indicate whether the ANC would participate in any coalition that might emerge from Weah’s round‑table discussions.
