Analyst Urges Prime Minister to Rethink CARICOM Strategy to Avoid International Isolation

Political analyst Derek Ramsamooj has issued a stark warning to the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, urging her to reconsider her approach to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Ramsamooj, a noted observer of regional politics, compared the current confrontational tactics to those of former U.S. President Donald Trump. He argues that such an approach may lead to the country losing its influence within the Caribbean bloc.

In his analysis, Ramsamooj highlights the shifting economic dynamics within the Caribbean, which require Trinidad and Tobago to adapt to these changes rather than persist with aggressive postures. “We live in a time when economic strengths are realigning across the region,” he noted, advocating for a strategy that embraces these transformations. By doing so, Ramsamooj believes Trinidad and Tobago can maintain and potentially enhance its standing in regional affairs.

According to Ramsamooj, the nation is at risk of international isolation if it continues on this path. “There’s no longer room for unilateral moves or neglect of diplomatic channels. Our success in CARICOM is tied to mutual respect and cooperation,” he stated. This perspective suggests that intact and robust relationships with neighboring islands are critical for advancing collective economic goals and ensuring a stable political environment in the Caribbean.

He further emphasized the need for diplomatic engagement, advising that cooperation could open doors to new opportunities and fortify existing alliances. Ramsamooj’s statements come at a crucial time when regional cooperation is needed more than ever to tackle shared challenges such as climate change, immigration, and economic recovery post-pandemic.

The call for a shift in strategy also serves as a reminder of the broader implications of diplomatic conduct. It reflects the importance of fostering a collaborative spirit within regional organizations to drive sustainable development. This diplomatic recalibration, as recommended by Ramsamooj, could prove instrumental in reaffirming Trinidad and Tobago’s place within CARICOM, ensuring its voice remains influential in shaping the region’s future.
