Altay Communities Symposium draws int’l scholars to Baku

The 14th International Altay Communities Symposium opened in Baku on 26 February, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the First Turkological Congress that was held in the city in 1926.

The symposium, held at the Presidium building of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), is themed “Altaic Studies: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.” It will run for four days and will feature 121 presentations covering migration, language, literature, history, religion, family values and traditions of the Altay peoples.

The event is organized by ANAS and the Institute of Folklore and is supported by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), TURKSOY, the Turkish Historical Society, the International Turkic Academy and the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB).

Scholars and specialists from 15 countries are participating, including Azerbaijan, Turkey, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Mongolia, India, China, Japan, North Macedonia, Hungary, Germany and Russia.

At the opening ceremony, Academician Isa Habibbayli, President of ANAS, highlighted the importance of international scientific gatherings devoted to Altaic studies and noted that holding the symposium in the historic venue where the First Turkological Congress convened gives the event particular significance.
