South Africa Prepares to Host 46th SADC Summit

South Africa is set to host the 46th Ordinary Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit of Heads of State and Government from August 16 to 17, 2026, in Durban. The summit aims to adopt decisions focused on accelerating industrialization, strengthening infrastructure development, enhancing food security, advancing regional integration, and promoting gender equality.

During the summit, President Cyril Ramaphosa will assume the SADC Chairpersonship for the 2026/27 term, placing South Africa at the helm of the 16-member regional bloc. According to Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola, the summit will follow a structured program of technical, ministerial, and political meetings to prepare decisions for consideration and adoption by Heads of State and Government.

The summit process has already commenced with technical meetings at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre. The Standing Committee of Senior Officials met from August 6 to 10 to consider reports from sectoral structures and make recommendations to Ministers. The Finance Committee will also meet to discuss the SADC budget, resource mobilization, and financial sustainability matters.

The SADC Council of Ministers, chaired by Minister Lamola, will convene from August 12 to 14 to consider recommendations from senior officials and deliberate on issues including industrialization, infrastructure, regional trade, food security, health, peace, and security. The council will also focus on advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment, which will be a key aspect of the summit.

The summit will consider 47 decisions submitted through the summit process, although this number may change following deliberations at preparatory meetings. Expected outcomes include accelerating regional industrialization and regional value chains, strengthening infrastructure connectivity and transport corridors, enhancing agricultural productivity and food security, and advancing beneficiation of critical minerals.

Other key priorities include improving regional peace, security, and stability, strengthening resource mobilization, and enhancing implementation and monitoring of SADC decisions. The summit will also feature President Ramaphosa’s SADC Public Lecture on August 14, which aims to stimulate dialogue on implementing SADC Vision 2050 and strengthening regional integration.

Minister Lamola stated that the summit presents an opportunity for Member States to deepen regional cooperation and pursue inclusive economic growth. The summit will conclude with a State Banquet hosted by President Cyril Ramaphosa on August 16, following the official summit opening.
