Port of Spain Alderman Wayne Griffith was assaulted by students from Tranquillity Government Secondary School as he attempted to intervene in a fight on Monday afternoon. A video of the incident, which shows a female student attacking the alderman and others joining in, has been circulating on social media.
The incident took place around 2:30 p.m. on Dundonald Street. Griffith, recognizing a group of students assaulting a fellow student, stepped out of his vehicle to intervene. Despite his request for them to disperse and his attempts to break up the fight, he was struck by a female student and subsequently attacked by others.
In addition to the physical assault, the alderman’s belongings—specifically a watch and a phone, together valued at $7,000—were stolen during the incident. Griffith, despite being in severe pain, consciously refrained from retaliating, mindful of the assailants’ youth.
Local officials have responded to the event. Port of Spain South MP Keith Scotland expressed his concern for Griffith, commending his restraint during the incident. Port of Spain Mayor Chinua Alleyne confirmed the event and said that it is currently under investigation by the Ministry of Education and the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS). Walter Stewart, the President of the National Parent-Teacher Association, extended his condolences to Griffith.
