**Air Canada Announces Seven New International Routes as It Pursues Global Expansion**

*Montreal, Sept. 3, 2026* – Air Canada, Canada’s largest airline, unveiled a plan to add seven new long‑haul routes to its network for the summer of 2027, targeting growth in Europe and Asia. The expansion is part of a broader strategy to transform the carrier into a “global airline,” according to Chief Commercial Officer Mark Galardo.

**New destinations**

The airline will launch service to five new foreign cities:

* Guangzhou, China – a route from Vancouver that avoids Russian airspace
* Oslo, Norway
* Dubrovnik, Croatia
* Shannon, Ireland
* Basel, Switzerland

In addition, Air Canada will increase frequency on the Toronto‑Shanghai corridor to daily service and will operate year‑round flights from Toronto and Montreal to Guatemala City.

By the summer of 2027, the carrier aims to operate more than 125 international routes to over 85 destinations, excluding the United States, representing an eight‑percent increase in overseas flight volumes compared with the summer of 2026.

**Fleet and delivery schedule**

The network growth will be supported by new long‑range Airbus A321XLR single‑aisle jets and Boeing 787 wide‑body aircraft. The first A321XLR entered Air Canada’s fleet in April 2026, with a “big batch” slated for delivery through 2027 and the final aircraft expected in 2029. The airline reduced its order for Boeing 787‑10s from 18 to 14 units last fall due to production delays; the first of these is scheduled to arrive later this year and enter service in 2027.

**Market context**

Air Canada’s expansion comes amid several industry challenges. Ongoing fuel‑price pressures linked to the conflict in Iran, a prolonged decline in Canadian demand for travel to the United States, and the continued closure of Russian airspace to Western carriers have constrained route planning, especially for polar flights between North America and Asia.

Statistics Canada data show that Canadian return trips from the United States in July 2026 were 27 percent lower than in July 2024. Aviation data tracker Cirium reported a 13 percent drop in Air Canada’s flight volumes between Canada and the United States over the same period.

In response, the airline has halted or delayed eight transborder routes beginning in the fall, while adding service to U.S. cities such as Nashville, Tennessee; Cleveland, Ohio; and Columbus, Ohio. Galardo noted that inbound traffic from the United States to Canada “has not fallen at all” and that American passengers also use Canada as a transit point for international travel.

**Leadership transition**

Air Canada’s executive committee, which includes Galardo, will continue to report to the board of directors until the appointment of new chief executive officer Anko Van der Werff in January 2027. Michael Rousseau stepped down as CEO on Monday after five and a half years in the role.
