In a tragic turn of events late Sunday, an Air Canada Express plane collided with a fire truck at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, resulting in the death of the two pilots on board. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey confirmed the incident early Monday, stating that the collision took place shortly after the plane’s landing.
The ill-fated plane, originating from Montreal and operated by Jazz Aviation LP, was carrying 76 people in total – 72 passengers and four crew members. Upon landing, it struck a Port Authority fire truck and came to an abrupt halt about halfway down the runway.
The accident claimed the lives of the captain and the co-pilot and led to the hospitalization of 41 individuals, including two airport rescue officers. The airport has since been closed and is not expected to resume operations until at least 2 p.m. local time.
Investigations into the cause of the collision are underway. Meanwhile, the incident has left a profound impact on the passengers, the airport staff, and the aviation industry at large.
