Africa is building drug factories; Now it needs enough buyers

African nations are increasingly investing in domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing as part of a broader effort to decrease reliance on imported medical supplies. According to data from the Access to Medicine Foundation, between 70% and 80% of medicines currently consumed across the continent are imported.

While governments are prioritizing the construction of new drug factories to bolster local production capacity, industry analysts suggest that securing a consistent market of buyers remains a significant challenge. The long-term viability of these manufacturing facilities depends on the ability to scale production and ensure that the locally produced pharmaceuticals reach a sufficient number of consumers to maintain operations.
