An administrative error at cryptocurrency platform Crypto.com has led to a massive fraud case after a customer received millions instead of a small refund. In 2021, Thevamanogari Manivel was due a refund of just 68.36 Australian dollars. However, due to a typo by an employee who entered the account number into the amount field, she received 10.47 million Australian dollars.
The mistake went unnoticed for seven months, during which Manivel distributed a substantial portion of the funds. The incident only came to light during an internal audit, prompting legal action. The case highlights significant vulnerabilities in financial transaction systems and the severe consequences of human error.
Crypto.com has since implemented additional checks to prevent similar incidents. The fraud investigation continues, with authorities tracing the distributed funds. This case serves as a cautionary tale for both crypto platforms and users about the importance of robust financial controls.
