Adiós, ‘Memo’: Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa retires after 22-year career

Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa has announced his retirement from elite soccer, bringing an end to a distinguished 22-year career. In an emotional video shared on X, Ochoa thanked his family, teammates, and fans for their unwavering support. ‘I never imagined how far a dream could take me. Today I can only look back with pride and say: THANK YOU,’ he said.

Ochoa was named in Mexico’s squads for six FIFA World Cups, a feat matched only by football greats Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. He was the first-choice goalkeeper for the 2014, 2018, and 2022 tournaments. His standout performance came against Brazil in 2014, where he made six saves to secure a goalless draw. At the 2022 World Cup, he saved a penalty from Poland’s Robert Lewandowski, becoming the first Mexican goalkeeper to stop a World Cup penalty.

The veteran began his career at Club America, debuting in 2004. He later played for French side Ajaccio, becoming the first Mexican-born goalkeeper in Europe. Ochoa also won six CONCACAF Gold Cups and the 2024-25 Nations League. After spells in France, Spain, and Belgium, he returned to Club America in 2019 to a massive fan reception. His final international appearance came at the 2026 World Cup, where he received a standing ovation at Estadio Azteca.
