Political activist and social commentator Twiggy has weighed in on the controversy surrounding the booing of Culture Minister Michelle Benjamin during the 2026 Emancipation Day celebrations, saying the focus should not be on the booing itself but on the reasons behind it.
In a video circulating on social media, Twiggy argued that members of the public had genuine frustrations and that the minister should reflect on what led to the reaction.
“The public know why they booed the minister… She know why too,” Twiggy said, adding that she also felt promises had been made to her that were not fulfilled.
She suggested that some people had not been treated fairly and believed they had few opportunities to have their concerns heard, leading them to express those frustrations publicly. According to Twiggy, the incident should be viewed as a sign that some members of the public feel unheard rather than simply as an act of disrespect.
Throughout the video, Twiggy repeatedly urged the minister to stop trying to “mamaguy” people, a Trinidad and Tobago expression meaning to mislead or deceive. She said many people were genuinely hurt and insisted that public officials should pay attention to the concerns being raised.
