The Aluminum Association of Canada is calling for increased economic diversification as the country navigates ongoing trade tensions with the United States. Jean Simard, president and CEO of the association, recently discussed the impact of current trade policies during an interview on France 24.
Simard characterized the ongoing dispute regarding aluminum trade as a departure from conventional disagreements, describing the current American stance as a posture that lacks economic logic. According to Simard, American industrial demand for aluminum significantly outpaces domestic production capacity, meaning that the imposition of tariffs will not effectively reduce the presence of Canadian aluminum in the U.S. market.
The association head argued that protectionist measures fail to eliminate the economic interdependence between the two nations. Instead, Simard stated that such policies serve to increase the costs associated with that existing interdependence.
In light of these challenges, the discussion highlighted Canada’s broader efforts to seek greater economic sovereignty by diversifying its trade relationships and reducing reliance on current U.S. policy trajectories.
