A 7-Year-Old’s Ode to a Parrot Just Won the Internet

Miles Phillips, a seven-year-old from Sydney, has become an unlikely viral sensation with his homemade song ‘Eastern Rosellas.’ The tune, inspired by the brightly coloured parrots he fed on Raymond Island, has amassed 1.5 million views across Instagram and TikTok, with nearly 3,000 comments cheering him on.

It all started when Miles was feeding birds on the veranda at Raymond Island. ‘There were pigeons, lorikeets, rosellas, but the one bird that stood out was the eastern rosella,’ he said. The chorus came to him instantly: ‘Eastern rosellas, eastern rosellas, look at the beautiful colours.’ With help from his father, Joel, he turned that moment into a full song.

The video of the song has been covered by major Australian artists including Ben Lee and Ball Park Music, and it’s been played on several radio stations. On Spotify, Triple J Unearthed even compared it to acts like Vampire Weekend and The Strokes. Hearing his song performed by famous musicians, Miles said, feels ‘really cool and a little bit strange and weird.’

Miles isn’t stopping there. He has another song in the works called ‘The Rock of Doom’ and has formed a band, the Spikeheads, with friends. ‘It starts off with a little idea, then I think of bigger ones until I’m happy,’ he said. His father says the response has been heartwarming, especially after their earlier song faced AI speculation. ‘This week we have my seven-year-old’s song about rosellas, which I think says something about, actually, our kids are going to be OK,’ Joel said.
