Opposition Leader’s UNGA Visit Not A Concern For Prime Minister

This report covers opposition leader’s unga visit with key details and context.

PM Has No Issue With Opposition Leader’s UNGA Visit: “The US Is a Free Country”

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says she has no objection to Opposition Leader Penelope Beckles attending side meetings during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, despite concerns raised by her party’s Public Relations Officer (PRO).

Both leaders were in New York for the high-level week, with Beckles arriving three days before Persad-Bissessar.

In a Facebook post, United National Congress (UNC) PRO Dr Kirk Meighoo questioned the Opposition Leader’s presence, suggesting her participation could have been politically motivated.

“What is she doing in the UN? Is she there to deliberately cause confusion? To contradict the Government? Is this a plot by overseas PNM elements in collaboration with the TT-based Opposition?” Meighoo asked.

However, speaking to Guardian Media outside the UN Headquarters on Saturday, Persad-Bissessar dismissed such concerns.

“The US is a free country. People are free to pursue whatever aims and ends that they seek to do. I have no issue. I did not meet her,” the Prime Minister said.

Her comments suggest a more open stance than that expressed by her party’s PRO, signaling that the Government is not taking issue with the Opposition Leader’s parallel presence at the global event.
