President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the suspected shooter of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk is now in custody. The statement was made during an interview on Fox News, and comes less than an hour before law enforcement officials were set to hold a news conference on their manhunt for the assassin. The incident took place at Utah Valley University during an outdoor event on Wednesday. The president revealed he had been informed of the arrest just minutes before the interview, and expressed hope that the suspect would face the death penalty. Although the FBI had released photos and video footage of a person of interest, they had yet to confirm the suspect’s identity or formally announce the arrest.
