Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister and Minister of Public Utilities, Barry Padarath, has outlined several pieces of legislation scheduled for debate in Parliament over the coming months.
Legislative Priorities
Utility Rates: The Minister confirmed that there will be no increase in water and electricity rates in the near future.
State of Emergency: Government intends to seek an extension of the State of Emergency, first declared on July 18. The motion is expected to be debated on Monday.
Finance Bill 2024: The bill, brought in the name of the Minister of Finance, is intended to support the country’s economic agenda.
Public Utilities Focus
Since assuming responsibility for the Ministry of Public Utilities, Padarath has held meetings with officials of the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA). He stated that these engagements contributed to the decision not to pursue proposed rate increases at this time.
Governance Approach
Padarath, who also serves as Leader of Government Business in Parliament, described the legislative agenda as one that emphasizes service delivery, economic development, and accountability in government decision-making.
