Trinidad and Tobago Backs US War on Caribbean Drug Cartels

The Government of Trinidad and Tobago has affirmed its full support for the US’s deployment of military assets in the Caribbean to combat terrorist drug cartels. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said that if the Maduro regime attacks Guyana, and the US needs access to Trinidadian territory for defense, her government will provide access without hesitation. However, she clarified that no such requests have been made by the US so far. Persad-Bissessar noted that Caribbean countries, especially Trinidad and Tobago, have seen a surge in transnational crime, violence, and financial crimes due to drug and arms trafficking. She said that while Trinidad and Tobago maintains good relations with Venezuela, small island states like theirs lack the resources to combat drug cartels. She warned that those involved in criminal activities should be concerned about the US military’s operations, which she confirmed are legal and have not infringed on any nation’s sovereignty.
