The African Union has thrown its weight behind the Correct Map campaign, an initiative aimed at replacing the conventional Mercator world map with a more accurate depiction of country sizes. The Mercator map, designed primarily for navigation, distorts the true sizes of continents and countries, presenting Africa, for instance, as similar in size to the US or China. However, the reality is that Africa is so vast that it can accommodate the US, China, India, Japan, and much of Western Europe with room to spare. This distortion, according to the African Union, is a longstanding misinformation campaign that needs to be corrected, and they are urging schools, governments, and international bodies to adopt maps that reflect true country sizes, such as the Equal Earth Projection. The campaign is seen as more than just a quest for geographical accuracy; it is a matter of African identity and pride.
