Cable barriers proven lifesavers, Hosein calls for wider highway use

Road safety advocate Yousuf Hosein is once again calling on authorities to prioritize the installation of cable barriers along Trinidad and Tobago’s highways, stressing that these barriers are proven to save lives.

Hosein, who survived a devastating highway accident in 2019, has become a familiar figure in the fight for safer roads. Holding a sign marked “Cable Barriers Save Lives” with images of serious crashes, he continues to remind the public and policymakers of the urgent need for action.

According to Hosein, too many lives have been lost in preventable collisions where vehicles crossed the highway median. He argues that cable barriers, already in use in parts of the country, must be extended to all major highways to reduce the risk of head-on crashes.

“Every week we hear about another family destroyed on our roads,” Hosein said during a recent appeal. “We need to stop talking and start acting. The evidence is clear — cable barriers save lives.”

His message comes at a time when Trinidad and Tobago continues to record rising numbers of road fatalities, sparking renewed debate about highway safety measures.

Hosein’s persistence has gained public support, with citizens echoing his call for the government and relevant agencies to accelerate barrier installations. Many believe his advocacy highlights not just an infrastructure issue, but a matter of valuing human life and protecting families from unnecessary tragedy.

For Yousuf Hosein, the mission is deeply personal — but it has also become a national cause. He says he will not stop until every major roadway is equipped with the protection needed to make highway travel safer for all.
