Former National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds has lashed out at the United National Congress (UNC) and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar for cancelling this year’s Independence Day Parade. Hinds pointed out what he termed as a pattern of ‘unpatriotic behavior’ from the opposition party and accused Persad-Bissessar of avoiding national events, especially when her party is not in power. Hinds dismissed the government’s reasons for cancelling the parade, namely, ongoing national security risks and financial constraints. He argued that the security concern targets a specific criminal group and does not pose a threat to the general population. As for the financial issue, Hinds pointed out that the parade costs approximately TT$1.5 million, a sum he believes the current administration, which he noted has the largest Cabinet in the country’s history, could easily absorb. Hinds urged the Prime Minister and her government to reconsider their decision and reinstate the parade, which he believes is needed for national stability, pride, and hope.
