Maracas Beach, one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most iconic destinations, is at the center of growing public concern over unregulated vendor activity. While the Ministry of Tourism has overarching control of the beach, vendor operations—including shark and bake stalls, umbrella, and chair rentals—fall under UDeCOTT. Currently, no contracts exist between UDeCOTT and vendors, creating a regulatory vacuum that has sparked frustration among beachgoers.

Visitors report being charged as much as $450 for tent rentals, with rows of tents and chairs crowding the beachfront, leaving little space for those who simply wish to enjoy the beach. Social media comments have described the situation as “extortion,” and viral videos have drawn national attention to the issue.

Security has also come into focus after a recent incident in which a man was badly beaten at the beach. Officials stressed that measures such as a permanent police post must be considered to ensure safety. Infrastructure at Maracas is also in decline, with many facilities requiring urgent maintenance.

Addressing the matter were:

Mr. Wayne Sturge, Minister of Defense

Mr. Phillip E. Alexander, Minister in the Ministry of Housing

Dr. Colin N. Gosine, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Investment and Tourism

They emphasized that vendors must be properly registered and contracted, with structured facilities provided to ensure fair access for all. The ministers confirmed discussions will continue with Minister Jearlean John, under whose portfolio UDeCOTT falls, and the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, to bring order to Maracas.

The government’s stated goal is to restore Maracas Beach as a safe, welcoming, and fairly managed public space—ensuring that citizens and tourists alike can once again enjoy its natural beauty without unnecessary costs or confrontation.
