Two security officers on duty at the compound responded quickly

A 55-year-old PH taxi driver was shot during an attempted armed robbery in Penal early Wednesday morning. The incident took place along Clarke Road, near the Heritage compound, at around 6 a.m.

The driver had earlier picked up a passenger near Mohess Road Extension before two other men, both Venezuelan nationals, entered the vehicle from the back seat. As the car approached the Heritage compound, one of the suspects struck the driver on the head with a metal object while the other pulled out a firearm and ordered him to stop.

When the driver attempted to get out, a struggle ensued and a gunshot was discharged, striking him in the thigh. The front-seat passenger fled, while the injured driver managed to escape and ran toward the Heritage compound seeking help.

Two on-duty security officers at the compound responded immediately. They pursued the suspects, captured them, and recovered a Smith & Wesson revolver loaded with two rounds of ammunition. The men were then handed over to Penal police officers.

The driver was taken to the Siparia District Health Facility for treatment and later discharged.

The Venezuelan nationals are expected to face multiple charges, including wounding with intent, possession of a firearm and ammunition, and assault with intent to rob. Investigations are ongoing.
