$2.6m Saved as Independence Day Parade Cancelled

The decision to cancel this year’s Independence Day parade and fireworks display will reportedly save the government at least $2.6 million. Prior to the cancellation, funding for the ceremonial events, including the parade that was projected to cost $1.5 million, had already been approved by the former People’s National Movement administration. The figure accounted for expenses such as Grand Stand facilities, usher hiring, media tower construction, audio system installation, guest refreshments, and chair and bus rentals. With the Grand Stand rental alone costing approximately $600,000, the cancellation is a significant cost-saving measure. Instead of the traditional celebrations, the government has chosen to observe a National Day of Prayer and Reflection. Legal Affairs Minister Saddam Hosein justified the move citing security concerns amidst the ongoing State of Emergency, adding that the saved funds will be redirected towards crime-fighting initiatives.
