A tragic incident occurred in Penal on August 8, 2025, when a pedestrian was killed and another injured after being struck by a truck. The driver, Mervyn Joseph, 33, was found to be intoxicated at the time of the accident. Joseph was charged with driving under the influence and pleaded guilty, resulting in a $10,000 fine and a three-year driving ban. The accident took place around 7:10 p.m. as Habib John, 47, and Ann Marie Codrington Mitchell were walking on Rochard Road. John was pronounced dead at the scene, while Codrington Mitchell was taken to the hospital for treatment.
