The man captured in a widely circulated video slamming into two pedestrians near Independence Square, Port of Spain, has been identified as Joseph Medina, a resident of Mt. Hope. He is said to be reportedly employed under a government minister in the Ministry of Education.
According to police sources, Medina was attempting to flee the scene of an earlier collision in which he allegedly struck the rear of another vehicle. The driver of that vehicle was reportedly pursuing him when the shocking incident occurred.
Eyewitnesses say Medina appeared to be highly intoxicated, a suspicion confirmed when he failed a breathalyzer test administered by authorities. He is currently being held at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
One of the victims, a woman, is said to be in critical condition, while the condition of the man struck alongside her is still being assessed.
Authorities have yet to confirm whether Medina will be officially charged, but the investigation remains active.
