In a groundbreaking step for inclusivity and health awareness, Barbie has launched its first-ever doll representing Type 1 diabetes. This new addition to the Fashionistas line was unveiled by Mattel on July 9, 2025, and aims to promote representation for children living with chronic conditions. The doll is dressed in a vibrant blue polka dot dress and features authentic diabetes management accessories, including a continuous glucose monitor and an insulin pump. Collaborating with Breakthrough T1D, Mattel ensured the doll accurately reflects the daily realities of managing Type 1 diabetes. Krista Berger, Senior VP at Mattel, emphasized the doll as a symbol of strength and empowerment, aiming to help children see themselves in Barbie, particularly those with health conditions. The launch has garnered excitement from parents and educators who view it as a significant move towards normalizing medical devices and fostering a positive self-image among children with diabetes. The Type 1 Diabetes Barbie is now available globally, joining other inclusive Barbies that celebrate diversity and representation.
