Trinidad and Tobago: Scotiabank Foundation Supports Library Renovation at Aranguez Government Primary School

As International Education Day approaches on January 24, students at Aranguez Government Primary School are benefiting from a newly refurbished library, made possible through a partnership with the Scotiabank Foundation. The library has been revitalized as part of Operation READ (Read Everyday and Discover), which aims to enhance equitable access to education and promote lifelong learning.

The upgraded library now provides a modern learning environment that combines traditional books with technological resources, encouraging student engagement and creativity. Scotiabank’s contributions facilitated structural repairs, new furniture, improved Wi-Fi connectivity, enhanced air-conditioning, and the acquisition of books, tablets, and printing equipment.

In addition to the physical upgrades, bank employees volunteered their time to assist with painting and sorting books, ensuring a well-curated collection of age-appropriate reading materials. Currently, 188 students participate in weekly library sessions that include independent reading, shared read-alouds, group discussions, and story comprehension activities.

A structured literacy intervention program is also in place for 33 students facing reading challenges. This program aims to provide targeted support to help these students improve their reading skills. Furthermore, Parent Literacy Workshops have been introduced to extend learning into homes and emphasize family involvement in education.

Nigel Clarke, the principal of the school, expressed gratitude to Scotiabank for its support, highlighting that Operation READ signifies a commitment to education and community development. He noted that the improvements to the library are expected to have a positive impact on students’ learning experiences.

Gayle Pazos, Senior VP and Managing Director of Scotiabank, reiterated the bank’s dedication to creating spaces that foster curiosity and provide students with the necessary tools for success. She emphasized the importance of strengthening literacy at the primary level, stating that initiatives like Operation READ are crucial for building a strong educational foundation.

The partnership between Scotiabank and Aranguez Government Primary School reflects a broader commitment to enhancing educational resources and opportunities for students in Trinidad and Tobago. By investing in the library and supporting literacy initiatives, the Scotiabank Foundation aims to contribute to the overall development of the community.

As the school continues to implement these programs, the hope is that more students will develop a love for reading and learning, which can lead to improved academic performance and lifelong learning habits. The refurbished library is seen as a vital resource in achieving these goals, providing a welcoming space for students to explore literature and engage with educational materials.

Overall, the collaboration between the Scotiabank Foundation and Aranguez Government Primary School serves as an example of how partnerships can enhance educational environments and support student success. With ongoing efforts to improve literacy and access to resources, the future looks promising for the students at Aranguez Government Primary School.
