Congress Member of Parliament Manish Tewari stated on Saturday that the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks fundamentally altered global geopolitics and security norms. His remarks coincided with New Delhi hosting the 18th BRICS Summit.
In a post on social media, Tewari paid tribute to the 2,977 victims of the attacks on the 25th anniversary of the event. He noted that the attacks, orchestrated by Osama bin Laden, involved hijackers primarily from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Lebanon.
Tewari questioned the historical role of international powers in the region during the 1980s and 1990s. He alleged that the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan formed a coalition to support Mujahideen fighters in Afghanistan to oppose the Soviet Union. He argued that these efforts, while successful in contributing to the collapse of the Soviet Union, unleashed forces that eventually led to the formation of Al-Qaeda and subsequent global terrorist activities.
The MP further observed that the attacks shifted the global geopolitical landscape, marking a transition away from the era of United States unipolarity that followed the fall of the Berlin Wall. He also highlighted the long-term societal impacts of the attacks, noting that intrusive, constant surveillance has become a normalized aspect of daily life worldwide.
Tewari also referenced the November 2001 BRIC report by Goldman Sachs, suggesting that the document, which was in preparation at the time of the attacks, may have signaled an emerging shift in global economic and political power.
