The President of the Famagusta District Organization, Yiannis Karousos, has raised concerns regarding staffing shortages at the Famagusta General Hospital, citing a lack of essential medical specialists and a need for increased nursing staff. In a formal letter addressed to the Minister of Health and the President of the State Health Services Organization (OKYpY), Karousos requested immediate clarification and a concrete timeline for addressing these operational issues.
According to the allegations made by Karousos, the hospital lacks daily coverage for several key departments. He stated that a pulmonologist visits the facility only three to four times per month, despite the hospital treating patients with serious pulmonary conditions. Similarly, he reported that neurological coverage is limited to once a week, even though the hospital manages cases involving strokes and other severe nervous system disorders. Karousos further claimed that the waiting list for a neurology consultation currently extends to six or seven months.
Regarding the ophthalmology department, Karousos noted that while the hospital previously maintained daily coverage, there is currently no permanent ophthalmologist on staff, which he argues hinders the ability to provide immediate assessments for serious cases. He also emphasized the necessity of hiring additional nursing staff to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the hospital’s departments.
In his correspondence, Karousos requested official information regarding whether medical positions previously assigned to the Famagusta General Hospital have been transferred to other public medical facilities. He asked for the reasoning behind any such decisions and details on how the resulting vacancies have been addressed.
Karousos stated that the Famagusta district requires adequate daily coverage for basic medical specialties, noting that the hospital serves both the local population and one of Cyprus’s largest tourist regions. He emphasized that the issue is a matter of public health and patient safety rather than a political dispute, and urged the Ministry of Health and OKYpY to take immediate action to strengthen the hospital’s resources.
