The Government of Belize has approved an emergency program worth approximately $5.2 million to address a growing mealybug infestation that is threatening sugarcane production and the livelihoods of farmers in northern Belize.
The initiative was announced on September 7th as the government and industry partners moved to protect the sugar industry from further losses caused by the pest.
Details of the program, including the allocation of funds and the specific measures to be implemented, have not yet been released.
