In a tragic turn of events, 20-year-old Jesus Cordelle Maharaj of Balandra’s Rampanalgas Village passed away a week after suffering severe injuries in an electrocution incident. The incident took place on the morning of Thursday 11th June, 2026, when a high-voltage line fell on the family’s home, causing immediate chaos and leading to the young man’s untimely demise.
On that fateful morning, Jesus’ father, Adrian Lewis, was awakened by a loud noise on the roof. Discovering a fire and electrical sparks, he alerted the family to evacuate. Amidst the pandemonium, Jesus stood near the doorway, assisting his siblings to escape. Tragically, he tripped over the fallen electrical line, leading to his electrocution. In a brave but dangerous attempt to help his son, Lewis also received an electrical shock.
Emergency services rushed Jesus to the Toco Health Facility, after which he was transferred to Sangre Grande Hospital and later to Mt. Hope Hospital. Despite the doctors’ best efforts, including amputating both his legs and several fingers due to injuries, Jesus succumbed to his injuries a week later, on Thursday 18th June.
The parents claim that this heartbreaking incident could have been prevented. They allege to have made complaints over the past four years about the high-tension line. Following the incident, T&TEC crews conducted repairs on the fallen wires. The tragic loss of young Jesus raises questions on the adequacy of electrical safety measures in the area.
