18-Year-Old Sets Guinness World Record as Youngest Male College Professor

An 18-year-old educator from Florida has made history after being officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s youngest male college professor.

Nathan Thomas earned the distinction after beginning his teaching career at Miami Dade College in August 2023 at just 18 years and 346 days old, surpassing a record that had stood for more than three centuries.

Rather than entering the classroom as a freshman like most people his age, Thomas took his place at the front of the lecture hall as an instructor, teaching COP 2270: C for Engineers, a computing and programming course.

Before becoming a professor, Thomas had already completed both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering with honours. His academic journey began unusually early, enrolling at Miami Dade College at the age of 10 before transferring to Florida International University at 14 to complete his degrees.

Speaking about his experience, Thomas said that once students are in the classroom, age becomes irrelevant because everyone is there to learn. He added that his focus has always been on helping students succeed through dedication and hard work.

Thomas credits his passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to his parents, who are both engineers, and says mathematics came naturally to him from an early age.

He also said his greatest satisfaction comes from seeing students finally understand difficult concepts, describing the experience as just as rewarding as solving a challenging problem himself.

Thomas has since enrolled at the University of Miami School of Law, where he is pursuing a Juris Doctor degree while continuing to teach online courses. He is expected to complete his law studies in 2028.
