According to the World Economic Forum’s 2026 Gender Gap Report, Morocco is positioned 139th out of 145 countries surveyed.
The country received a score of 0.632 on the overall gender‑gap index. For comparison, the top three nations—Iceland, Finland and Norway—scored 0.930, 0.872 and 0.857 respectively, with a score of 1.0 representing full gender equality.
The index is composed of four sub‑indicators. Morocco scored 0.424 in economic participation and opportunities, placing it 141st. In health and survival it earned 0.956, ranking 133rd. The education sub‑indicator gave Morocco a score of 0.958, placing it 118th. Political empowerment was the lowest, with a score of 0.188 and a global rank of 90.
Regionally, Morocco ranks 11th among Arab states, following the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Tunisia, Jordan, Lebanon, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. In the Maghreb, it is second only to Algeria. The report does not include Libya and Mauritania.
Over the past two decades, the global gender‑gap closure rate has reached 69.2%. The report notes that no economy has achieved full parity this year, and estimates that complete gender equality would require 120 years of progress.
For the 17th consecutive year, Iceland has maintained the highest level of gender equality at 93%. Since the index’s inception in 2006, European economies have occupied 69% of the top ten positions, while East Asian and Pacific economies hold 17%.
