Macau’s first case under the national security law was concluded on 6 November 2026 when former Legislative Council member Qu Keng‑sin (區錦新) was sentenced to 12 years and six months in prison. Qu was convicted on six counts: three for “treason” (subversion of the state’s authority), three for “establishing contact with foreign organisations, groups or individuals to endanger national security”, and one for “breach of secrecy”. The court found that the evidence proved he had engaged in activities that threatened the security of the Macau Special Administrative Region. The sentence marks the first application of Macau’s national security legislation, which was introduced in 2021. The case is being monitored by both local and international observers as it sets a precedent for how the law will be enforced in the region.
