The Arab Employees Union announced that it has begun a 10‑day administrative strike in the Gaza Strip, rejecting a series of decisions by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) that it says threaten the job security and rights of its staff. The union said the strike will also negatively affect the quality and continuity of services provided to Palestinian refugees. During a press conference held Monday at the western gate of UNRWA’s regional office in Gaza, union officials explained that the action follows a “major march” organized by employees from the Gaza and North regions. They said the protest is a response to UNRWA’s policies of staff reductions, layoffs and the privatization of some essential programs, according to the Palestinian Media Center. The union warned that the agency’s measures could undermine the safety of its employees and jeopardise the delivery of humanitarian, educational, health and relief services amid the ongoing conflict and blockade in the Gaza Strip. It called for continued union and public actions, urging all staff to participate in upcoming demonstrations and to unite in conveying their demands to UNRWA and the international community. The union demanded that UNRWA immediately halt the measures affecting staff rights and dignity, and that it engage in a serious, responsible dialogue aimed at fair solutions that protect workers’ rights and ensure the uninterrupted provision of essential services to refugees. Signage displayed during the march condemned UNRWA’s policies and highlighted the potential humanitarian consequences of cuts and privatization. The Arab Employees Union reiterated that solidarity among workers and the broader community is essential in confronting staff reductions and service cuts, stressing that the rights of employees and the services they deliver to refugees cannot be negotiated or used as leverage.
